Chapter 162: First Guardian Room Tournament
Chapter 162: First Guardian Room Tournament
The first round ended up being Kris fighting against Sergei which I was surprised to see the latter even chose to participate to begin with.
But from what I understand, he was simply participating to test himself and not because he really wants the room that the others were apparently fighting over.
Kris and Sergei got into their combat stances facing each other, the catboy raising his greatsword above his shoulder like it weighed nothing while Kris simply stood at ease opposite him.
"My Lord? If you would," Olivia called out to me, indicating I should be the one to start the duel.
I raised one of my floating hands, making sure everyone could see it before dropping it down.
The two moved immediately, Kris having jumped high into the air while Sergei crossed his arms and sent shadow spikes thrusting out from the ground, piercing through the space that Kris had been standing in.
Kris spun in the air and held his greatsword in front of him like a shield.
Right on time as well since Sergei shot his shadow spikes up towards Kris, trying to catch him while he was in the air.
The spikes crashed against Kris’s sword but were all deflected away as he clearly increased his weight to push through Sergei’s attack.
Sergei summoned a larger shadow spike and sent it speeding towards the airborne catboy.
Kris suddenly changed direction and dodged the spike that was heading towards him without moving his body, almost like the sword he was holding pulled him away from the attack.
He then plummeted straight towards Sergei who, instead of dodging it, gathered a large concentration of shadows which he formed into a giant spear hovering above him.
I’m guessing he intends to turn this into a contest of strength to see who was stronger.
I watched as Kris’s sword smashed into Sergei’s shadow spear, the impact causing a large shockwave to explode out throughout the hall right before Kris’s sword broke through and crashed into Sergei.
The shadow Guardian got smashed into the ground before Kris leapt away from him and looked at Sergei with concern, only for him to push himself back up like nothing happened.
"I lost..." Sergei muttered, dusting himself and accepting the results without any hint of denial.
Kris grinned, "Ahahaha~ I’ve got to admit, you almost got me at the last part there! I had to use everything I’ve got just to push through your attack!"
Sergei made a snorting noise behind his mask, "Hmph... And yet you still managed to push through. For the record, I was using all of my strength to stop you and you still broke through."
I’ll be honest, I’m actually surprised Kris won that bout, though I suppose it’s somewhat because of the fact that Sergei tried to win in a contest of strength when it wasn’t his forte.
The two of them retreated from the centre of the hall to allow the next pair to fight, this one being Leena and Ava.
The two of them stood a distance away from each other and I was honestly expecting this fight to be over pretty quickly because this was definitely a really bad matchup.
It seems like both of them also knew this since Ava and Leena seemed to be looking at each other with complicated looks on their faces.
"I apologise for this, Miss Ava."
"Fufufu~ Don’t be. I suppose this is also fate in some way."
Yeah... This is going to be over in an instant.
I raised my hand and made sure both of them were ready before I lowered my hand.
Ava lifted her staff and a magic circle appeared in front of her and...
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three gunshots filled the air and Ava was struck in her chest three times, the bullets piercing through her body and causing her to stumble back a few steps.
Ava chuckled mirthlessly, "Fufufu~ As I thought, I really didn’t even have time to cast a barrier spell."
Leena lowered the rifle that was still smoking from being fired, "I apologise again, Miss Ava."
"Fufufu~ It’s alright. This just means that I still have room for improvement~"
Like I thought... Even though Ava has arguably the strongest firepower out of all of the Guardians... She needs time to cast her spells. If you manage to get to her before she could even complete her spells, then there’s no way she could fight back.
So for her to be matched up with Leena who could just lift up her weapon and pull the trigger... This was a seriously bad matchup for her.
Well... Since we only just thought of this challenge recently, I guess it’s still not perfect yet and there’s still room for improvement... So maybe we can set up more rules later on to make it a fairer competition for everyone?
The two of them returned and I could see that Ava originally wanted to walk over to me, probably hoping to receive some pampering for what she went through, but she spotted the other Bunarfs in attendance and changed her mind to walk away instead.
The last pair for the first round was Olivia and Jia Lian, the latter looking quite nervous in contrast to Olivia who was clearly itching to begin her fight.
Both of them were looking closely at me when I raised my hand and lowered it.
The two of them moved at the same time, Olivia charging towards Jia Lian while Jia Lian projecting a shield in front of her.
In a way, we were watching an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
I didn’t even realise that I had held my breath until the two came into contact where Olivia punched down hard on Jia Lian’s shield.
Sparks appeared from where Olivia’s fist collided with Jia Lian’s shield and it seems like there’s a stalemate.
I could see that Olivia was pushing Jia Lian back where she would slide a few feet backwards before she heaved against the force pushing her back and slowly advanced forward to push the red Oni back to regain the ground she lost and then some.
Then Olivia would also dig in her heels and push back as well, reclaiming back the ground she lost to push Jia Lian back once more.
For these two, there were no exchanges of blows as the both of them seemed to want to show who was superior in this aspect where Olivia would try to break through Jia Lian’s defense with her strength while Jia Lian maintained her defense through her willpower while being pressed down by Olivia.
Between the two, I have no idea who would win in a bout like this and I was watching closely as the both of them kept pushing against each other.
Everyone else around me seemed to be thinking the same thing as we watched the two girls push against each other with all their might and even the air around them seemed to distort from the amount of force these two were exerting...
I spotted the crack in Jia Lian’s wall as she got pushed back again, this time the aura around Olivia intensifying as she loomed over Jia Lian to try and overpower her.
Even though Jia Lian was clearly on the defensive for this, she did not give up and slammed her shield back against her assailant to slowly push their way back.
Olivia let out a roar and pushed back, the electrical sparks around her appearing in their full glory for a moment before there was the sound of shattered glass in the air.
Jia Lian’s shield broke from that sudden force and it shattered to a million pieces, the translucent pieces floating away like leaves in an autumn wink.
However, Olivia was not able to press on her advantage as the shield exploding had caused her to reel back from the shockwave, giving Jia Lian the space and time she needed to materialise another shield again.
Olivia saw the shield in front of her again and let out a low growl before she went ahead to deliver several punches in quick succession, forcing Jia Lian to take a few steps back each time a fist struck on her shield to dampen the blow.
When cracks appeared on her shield again, Olivia did not waste any time in pulling back her fist once again before striking against the shield with all her strength.
This time, Jia Lian’s shield shattered without being able to blast Olivia back so the red Oni followed up with a punch to her abdomen, causing the girl to double over and fall face first onto the ground.
Thankfully, her injuries had already healed up so there was no permanent damage.
Olivia then went ahead to pump her fist into the air to show that she was victorious and there were several cheers and claps in response to that.
Well... Can’t say I’m surprised to see that since I kind of predicted Olivia would advance to the last round of the event no matter who she was paired with...
