Chapter 223 The Dark Mark (1)

Chapter 223 The Dark Mark (1)

He pulled the little statue of Krum from his pocket, held it in his palm, and watched it walk back and forth. The little model walked a little like the real Krum, with his feet splayed out, his shoulders slightly bent forward, and his feet splayed on the ground, which was much less impressive than when he was riding his broom.

"I wish you could fly over and bring Hermione over for me," Ron murmured.

But it was just a statue, it could only walk on the palm of his hand and could not do anything else.

"And Lamia," added Harry, who was walking behind him. The two of them walked in the same direction without discussing it, but in tacit understanding.

Harry listened to the sounds from the original commotion. Everything seemed much calmer. Perhaps the commotion was over.

"I hope everyone else is okay," Harry said in a low voice after a moment, his tone filled with worry.

"They'll be fine," said Ron.

"I hope so. We need to hurry, Ron." Harry took the lead and walked in front of Ron.

But suddenly Harry stopped, and Ron bumped into his back. "What the..."

Harry turned his head and looked behind him, then raised his finger to silence Ron.

Ron quickly looked over and listened to the sound. It seemed like someone was walking towards them, one foot high and one foot low. They waited there, listening to the stumbling footsteps in the dark bushes, but the footsteps suddenly stopped.

"Hello?" Harry called.

There was no sound, and Harry took a few steps forward. It was pitch black all around, and he couldn't see anything further away, but he could sense someone standing just out of his sight.

"Who's there?" he asked.

Then, without warning, a voice broke the silence. It was unlike any other sound they had heard in the woods. It was not a tense shout, but a spell.

"The bones reappear!"

Then, out of the darkness that Harry's eyes were trying to penetrate, there emerged a huge, gleaming green object and, suddenly, it leaped over the treetops and took off into the air.

"What is this—" Ron said nervously, and hurried forward, looking up at the thing that had just appeared.

At first Harry thought it was another pattern of leprechauns, but then he realized it was an enormous skull made up of countless emerald green star-like things. A huge python was emerging from the skull's mouth like a tongue.

As they watched, the skull rose higher and higher, emitting a dazzling light in a cloud of green smoke, which looked like a new constellation against the black night sky.

Suddenly, screams broke out in the woods around them. Harry didn't understand the source of the screams. The only possible reason was the sudden appearance of the skeleton.

It was now high up in the air, lighting up the woods like a ghastly neon sign. Harry looked in the darkness for whoever had conjured the skeleton, but he saw no one.

"Who's there?" he called again.

No one answered.

But from the woods behind them came the shouts of Lamia and Hermione. Lamia saw Ron and Harry walking towards them from the tree, so she rushed over with Hermione.

"Harry, hurry up, get out of there!" Hermione grabbed Lamia's waist and shouted from the tree.

"What's going on?" said Harry, startled to see Hermione's face was pale and terrified.

Lamia jumped down not far from them, and Hermione hurriedly grabbed Harry's collar and dragged him back.

"It's the Dark Mark, Harry!" groaned Hermione, pulling desperately at him. "You-Know-Who's mark!"

"Voldemort's—"

"Harry, let's go!"

But they had only taken a few panicked steps when they heard a series of puffing sounds, and twenty wizards fell from the sky and surrounded them.

Harry spun around, immediately noticing the fact that each of the wizards had their wands drawn, each pointed at him, Ron, Lamia, and Hermione.

Without thinking, he quickly shouted, "Hide!"

Several people quickly lay on the ground, and Lamia protected Hermione under her body.

“Stupefy!” twenty voices shouted simultaneously—and then there was a series of blinding flashes, and Lamia felt her hair sway and ripple as if a strong wind were blowing through the clearing.

She raised her head slightly and saw that rays of burning red light shot out from the wizard's wand, intersecting each other above their heads, hitting the tree trunk, and being bounced into the darkness.

"Stop!" a familiar voice shouted. "Stop! That's my son!"

The wizard in front of Lamia had lowered his wand, and they turned to see Mr. Weasley striding towards them with a look of horror on his face.

"Ron - Harry -" his voice trembled, "Hermione - Lamia, are you all right?"

"Get out of the way, Arthur," said a cold, emotionless voice.

It was Mr. Crouch. He and the other wizarding officials of the Ministry had gathered around them. Harry stood up and faced them. Mr. Crouch's face was set in anger.

"Which of you did this?" he asked sharply, his sharp eyes darting between the four of them, lingering longest on Lamia, as if remembering Bagman's words: Lamia's identity was not simple.

His tone slowed down a bit, "Which of you conjured the Dark Mark?"

But the children obviously didn't notice the change in his tone.

"We don't!" said Harry, pointing to the skull above.

"We didn't do anything!" Ron said, rubbing his elbows and looking at his father angrily, "Why did you attack us?"

"Don't lie, sir!" said Mr. Crouch. He was not in a good mood towards Ron. He pointed his wand at Ron and his eyes were bulging out - he looked a little crazy. "You were found at the crime scene!"

"Barty," whispered a witch in a long woolen sweater, "they're only children, Barty, there's no way they could—"

"Where did this mark come from, you four?" asked Mr. Weasley anxiously.

"Over there," Hermione said in a trembling voice, pointing to where they had heard the noise, "Lamia and I saw someone behind the tree... They were talking loudly - a spell -"

"Oh, they were just standing there, weren't they?" said Mr. Crouch, turning his bulging eyes on Hermione again, his face full of suspicion. "And they said a spell, didn't they? You seem to know quite a bit about making the Mark, miss—"

"It wasn't us."

Lamia stepped forward, standing in front of Hermione.
