Chapter 203 Distress
Chapter 203 Distress
Shu Yun flicked Gu Xi's head in an annoyed tone, "Now you know how painful it is, don't you, crying now?"
Shu Yun poured a glass of warm water for Gu Xi, "Take this and try drinking seven sips in one go."
"Hic, okay, hiccup, hiccup, Mom," Gu Xi said haltingly.
Shu Yun patted his head and said, "If you're feeling unwell, talk less."
Gu Xi nodded, picked up the enamel cup, gulped down seven mouthfuls of water, patted her bulging belly, and burped, "Baby is so full."
Shu Yun: "Are you still feeling unwell?"
The little guy checked it out, his eyes lit up, he shook his head, and the little tuft of hair on his head swayed a few times. "Oh, I'm really not hiccuping anymore, I feel so good."
Shu Yun stroked the little guy's soft hair. "Alright, put on another coat, let's go."
Shu Yun got on the bicycle, with Gu Xi sitting on the back. Shu Yun was worried, so she found a rope and tied Gu Xi around her waist. The package to be mailed was tied to both sides of the bicycle.
They bumped along the way to the city. Gu Xi was in the back with the mountain wind blowing the whole way. Although Shu Yun had put a hat and a scarf on him, his little face was still red from the wind when they arrived in the city, like a little apple.
Carrying the package was inconvenient, so Shu Yun went to the post office first and mailed the items.
Gu Xi followed obediently behind her, sneezing slightly. After all, she was her own child and she felt sorry for him. Shu Yun rubbed his cold little hands, found a breakfast shop, ordered a bowl of wontons, took a small bowl, and scooped half of it for Gu Xi, saying, "Have a sip of soup to warm yourself up first."
Gu Xi held the steaming bowl in her little hands, inhaled the aroma of the wontons, took a small sip with her pointed little mouth, and immediately a big smile bloomed on her face. "Mommy, it's so delicious!"
After saying that, he took another sip, but drank it too quickly and choked, coughing several times.
Shu Yun wiped his mouth and said, "Drink slowly, you can order more later if you're not full."
The little guy nodded his head like a chick pecking at rice, and when he was eating happily, he stood up and jumped around.
“Mom, it’s Aunt Wang.” Gu Xi tugged at Shu Yun’s sleeve. Shu Yun looked in the direction Gu Xi was pointing and saw Wang Chunmei and Ding Hongmei beside her.
The two carried their things and talked as they walked into a small alley. Shu Yun then looked away.
After shopping together, Wang Chunmei and Ding Hongmei became much closer again. In order to get closer to Wang Chunmei, Ding Hongmei even told Wang Chunmei about her own family affairs, treating Wang Chunmei as a kind elder.
Just as Ding Hongmei had expected, Wang Chunmei's eyes revealed sympathy and reluctance. She patted Ding Hongmei's hand and sighed, "Your father did something wrong."
The two walked into the alley as they talked. Walking into the alley would be a shortcut to the nearest state-run restaurant, but there were very few people in the alley.
Wang Chunmei and Ding Hongmei hadn't walked far when they saw two men standing very close together at the corner of a wall in the alley. They were simply dressed. Wang Chunmei couldn't hear what they were saying, and instinctively glanced in their direction a few times. However, the two men were unusually perceptive and turned their faces away almost as soon as Wang Chunmei looked at them.
The two fell silent and walked out hand in hand. One of them carried a black briefcase, and because they were walking so fast, a piece of paper fell out of his pocket.
Wang Chunmei called out to the two of them, "Comrades, you've dropped your things."
Wang Chunmei bent down to pick up the folded paper from the ground when a gust of wind blew it open, revealing a map. The map clearly showed the city's layout, and Wang Chunmei even saw the military camp and the train station with the highest passenger flow marked in the map.
"What?!" Wang Chunmei's eyes widened, alarm bells rang, and only one thought occupied her mind: run.
She stopped taking her things, turned around, grabbed Ding Hongmei, and ran backwards.
The two men exchanged a glance. "Chase them!"
Ding Hongmei was being led forward, still somewhat confused. "Auntie Wang, slow down, is something wrong?"
Wang Chunmei gasped for breath and whispered, "They are spies; we must get rid of them as soon as possible."
Ding Hongmei's eyes widened, and she paused for a moment. The tugging at her caused Wang Chunmei, who was holding her hand, to slow down as well. Ding Hongmei glanced back and saw that the man was much faster than the two women and was about to catch up!
Unaware of anything amiss, Wang Chunmei pulled Ding Hongmei along, running towards the alley's exit, panting heavily. "Come on, let's hold on a little longer. Soon, soon, once we're out of this alley, there are people everywhere, and they certainly won't dare to do anything to us."
Just as the alleyway connecting to the main street was within reach, bright light streamed in, and Wang Chunmei could hear the jingling of bicycle bells as they passed by, before she could even catch her breath, she was violently pushed backward. She lost control and was caught red-handed by two men chasing after her.
After pushing the person out, Ding Hongmei turned and ran away without looking back.
Just now, when she looked back, one of the men could almost reach out and grab her clothes. Ding Hongmei didn't want to be caught by the secret agents. She had heard that ordinary people who were caught by secret agents never had a good ending. She didn't want to die, so she could only let Wang Chunmei die first.
She was so young, she couldn't die. Anyway, Wang Chunmei was already so old, she had enjoyed everything she could, so she probably wouldn't have any regrets if she died. Ding Hongmei felt no guilt at all, and she practically tumbled and crawled out of the room.
However, her physical fitness was too poor. She tripped over a pebble at the alley entrance and fell. She braced herself, one hand already reaching out of the alley entrance, but before she could even show a smile, she was pulled back.
Her eyes widened instantly. No! Someone, please save me!
He frantically pried at the ground with both hands, but to no avail. He could only be dragged away like a dead dog.
Wang Chunmei's mouth was covered. She looked at the junior she used to love in disbelief. She never expected that such a pitiful appearance could hide such a venomous heart. However, at this moment, Ding Hongmei had no intention of maintaining the superficial friendly relationship. She leaned against the wall in a sorry state, panting.
Before Wang Chunmei could figure out how to escape, a hand chop came down and she quickly fell into a deep sleep. When she woke up again, she found herself in a dimly lit storage room with only a small window on the high wall, which was covered with newspapers. Only a faint light shone through, allowing her to tell that it was daytime.
"What should we do with these two?" the tall, thin man with a horse-like face asked.
"Since our identities have been exposed, let's just kill them." The speaker was rather short, looked refined, and had a smiling face, but his curved eyes gleamed with a vicious cold light; he was clearly a smiling tiger.
Upon hearing this, Ding Hongmei, who had already been like a dead fish on the chopping board, began to struggle violently again.
