Chapter 249 The Crack in the Truth
Chapter 249 The Crack in the Truth
The night was deep, and the city lights outside the window shone brightly, their neon reflections casting dappled shadows on the floor-to-ceiling windows. Lin Chuyue sat at her desk, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the cover of a document, her brow slightly furrowed, her eyes deep and unfathomable.
The handwriting on the document was clear and strong, each word conveying a message that could not be ignored. Her gaze fell on the name on the document, and a slight ripple stirred in her heart—Li Zhanchuan.
The man's past seemed shrouded in a fog. She thought she had found enough information, but when she actually opened the file, she felt an indescribable emptiness.
What she found out was perhaps only what he wanted her to see.
A knock suddenly sounded, crisp and steady.
Lin Chuyue snapped back to her senses, raised her eyes, and said in a deep voice, "Come in."
The door was slowly pushed open, and Li Zhanchuan's tall figure appeared in the doorway. He was wearing a black shirt today, with the cuffs slightly rolled up, revealing his strong wrists, and his every move exuded a calm and composed aura.
His gaze fell on the documents on the table, a barely perceptible smile flashing across his eyes.
"I hope I can handle it?" Lin Chuyue repeated calmly, her tone devoid of any emotional fluctuation.
Li Zhanchuan didn't answer immediately. Instead, he walked to the desk, casually flipped open the document with his long fingers, and scanned the words one by one. His tone was indifferent: "You did a good job."
His tone was casual, even carrying a hint of subtle appreciation. But it was precisely this unsurprised attitude that inexplicably stirred a sense of unease in Lin Chuyue's heart.
She stared at him intently, her gaze probing: "So, you're not surprised?"
Li Zhanchuan's lips curled up slightly, and he looked at her meaningfully: "I knew you would investigate me."
Lin Chuyue narrowed her eyes slightly, her doubts deepening.
His candor made her feel like she had fallen into an invisible trap—she thought she was tracking the truth, but in reality, was she being unknowingly led by him in a direction he wanted her to see?
She tapped her fingertips lightly on the table, her voice calm: "Since you know I can investigate, how much do you think I can find out?"
Li Zhanchuan chuckled softly, tapped his long fingers lightly on the table twice, then slowly closed the file and pushed it back to her: "What you found is far from enough."
Lin Chuyue's heart skipped a beat, and she gripped the document tightly, staring at him sharply: "What exactly do you want me to find out?"
Li Zhanchuan did not answer, but slowly took a step closer to her, leaned down slightly, and said in a deep voice: "Some truths cannot be found just by wanting to investigate them."
His presence was so close, carrying a uniquely cold aura, along with the cool scent of cedar and mint, that Lin Chuyue's heart skipped a beat.
She suddenly took a step back, forcing herself to calm down, and asked in a calm tone, "You mean, you'll stop me?"
“I won’t stop you.” Li Zhanchuan chuckled, a deep meaning flashing in his eyes. “I’m just reminding you that some truths, once revealed, can never be undone.”
His tone wasn't urgent, but it carried an undeniable weight, causing Lin Chuyue's fingers to involuntarily tighten.
She paused for a few seconds, then slowly said, "If you can't turn back, then move forward."
Li Zhanchuan's gaze paused slightly, seemingly surprised by her firm answer. Then, he chuckled softly, his deep voice carrying a hint of ambiguous appreciation: "Very good."
The atmosphere in the room was quiet and oppressive. The two stared at each other for a moment, as if trying to figure out each other's true thoughts.
A moment later, Li Zhanchuan straightened up, glanced at the time, and said casually, "It's getting late, you should rest."
Lin Chuyue didn't respond immediately. Instead, she looked at his back and the words he had just said came to mind: "Some truths, once revealed, can never be undone."
Her intuition told her that this statement was more than just a warning; it was more like a hint.
She took a deep breath, turned around and went back to her desk, turned on her computer, and continued to look through the documents at hand.
There was no turning back for her.
