Chapter 153: His Good Fortune [Revised]
Chapter 153: His Good Fortune [Revised]
After the live broadcast ended, Yan Zhuoyu drove home and took a relaxing bath.
She wore high heels all night, and her ankles were sore and swollen. The soreness and swelling gradually subsided after being enveloped in hot water.
On the shelf next to me hung a light blue cotton nightgown. Although it was cold, the house had underfloor heating, so it wouldn't be too cold to wear the nightgown.
She still feels that wearing lighter clothing while sleeping will improve her sleep quality.
When Yan Zhuoyu finished changing her clothes and came out of the bathroom, she heard Pei Weijin having a video call with his grandmother.
His tone was helpless, but his expression was gentle and smiling.
"Grandma, why did you dye your hair? Those hair dyes are bad for your health."
Grandma snorted: "It's all because you said that Zhuoyu, the eldest daughter, wanted to video call me. We couldn't coordinate the times the past few days. Today I finally have some free time. We haven't seen each other for so long, so I have to dress up properly and look more formal."
Pei Weijin caught a glimpse of Yan Zhuoyu standing at the bathroom door, looked up and waved to her, signaling her to come over and make a phone call together.
Having not seen each other for many years, not only was Grandma nervous, but Yan Zhuoyu was also a little nervous.
Putting aside her short, dog-chewed hair from childhood, she worried that her grandmother might not recognize her because of how much she had changed as she grew up.
Thinking this, Yan Zhuoyu quietly approached Pei Weijin and whispered, "You talk to Grandma first and tell her that I'm drying my hair and I need to change my clothes."
After saying that, she took off the nightgown she had just put on and rummaged through the closet, eventually finding a set of clothes that looked quite old, though she didn't know how they had ended up there.
Yan Zhuoyu stood in front of the mirror and carefully examined herself.
Indeed, this outfit bears some resemblance to her childhood style.
When she came out of the bathroom, Pei Weijin saw her outfit and hesitated for a moment. He covered the microphone on his phone and asked softly, "Baby, that loungewear dress you wore earlier was actually quite suitable."
Yan Zhuoyu whispered in the same tone, "Then why didn't you say so earlier that I would change it back?"
Grandma couldn't hear their voices for a while, only faint breathing sounds. She thought it was a cell phone signal problem, and since she was old and her hearing wasn't very good, she started muttering to herself, planning to call the caregiver for help.
"Hey? You brat, what are you saying? I can't hear a word you say."
The call returned to normal as soon as the caregiver arrived.
Yan Zhuoyu cleared her throat and saw her somewhat thin grandmother on the other end of the video call. She felt a mix of emotions and brushed a stray hair behind her ear to hide her discomfort.
"Grandma," she called softly, her voice trembling slightly.
The old lady had dyed her hair black and had a kind and warm smile. Although she had suffered a lot from chemotherapy in previous years and lost a lot of weight after controlling her diet, she had not lost any energy and looked more energetic than some young people today.
She leaned closer to the screen, seemingly wanting to get a better look at Yan Zhuoyu's features.
Grandma smiled and teased, "Oh dear, my eldest daughter, do you still recognize your grandma? Haven't seen her in a long time? Does she look like she's aged quite a bit?"
Her tone was relaxed and natural, and Yan Zhuoyu also relaxed, as if she had returned to that carefree childhood.
"How could that be, Grandma? You'll always be young in my heart. I think you're even more beautiful than before!"
She had a sweet tongue and kept praising the old lady, making her very happy and beaming from ear to ear.
Grandma smiled so hard her eyes narrowed into slits, and even the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes seemed to soften a lot: "Our little darling is the most beautiful. Tonight, Grandma even specially asked the caregiver to broadcast the Singles' Day party you attended, the one with the Black Cat or White Cat. You wore a little red dress and looked so pretty! I always said you were pretty when you were little, and you've become even more beautiful now that you're grown up."
Yan Zhuoyu didn't correct her on the wrong name for the party. She thought that if calling the party "Rainbow Cat Singles" would make her grandmother happier, then she would call it that from now on.
While the two were chatting, Pei Weijin listened quietly from the side without disturbing them, acting as a phone stand.
Grandma laughed for a while, then suddenly became serious and called out Pei Weijin's name: "Jinjin, go out for a bit. Grandma wants to talk to Zhuoyu alone. Go to the study and stay there. Don't eavesdrop, okay?"
Upon hearing this, Yan Zhuoyu felt nervous again, wondering what her grandmother wanted to say to her alone.
"Okay, just call me if you need anything."
Pei Weijin didn't ask any more questions. He wasn't a very curious person. After handing the phone to Yan Zhuoyu, he went to the study.
As soon as he left, Grandma couldn't hold back her smile, and it returned to her face.
“Sweetie, send Grandma your bank account number and Grandma will transfer some money to you. Grandma couldn’t be there when you got married, but we can’t skimp on the formalities. Besides, we girls need to have some money so we won’t be mistreated.”
“Although I watched this rascal grow up and his character is impeccable, you still need to have some protection for yourself,” Grandma said earnestly.
Yan Zhuoyu thought her grandmother would say something important, but she didn't expect it to be this.
She felt a surge of warmth in her heart; it was so good that someone still cared about her.
"Don't worry, Grandma, Pei Weijin's money is all with me. I'm doing fine with him, and I've never suffered any grievances."
Grandma nodded, but was still a little worried: "Really? Don't lie to Grandma. What's with the clothes you're wearing? They're so out of style. Is he not letting you dress up or buy new clothes?"
Yan Zhuoyu: "..."
Her carefully selected vintage-style clothes...
"Really, no, I just changed my clothes. I wanted to feel more comfortable with him. He treats me very well, I don't need anything, all I need is for you to come and spend more time with us!"
Grandma was relieved: "That's good. You're such a good girl, virtuous and capable. It's a blessing for our boy to marry you."
“But please send me your bank card. Grandma will give you some pocket money. We’re better off now, and I’m old and don’t really need to spend money. You can use it to buy yourself something nice to eat. I feel so sorry for you seeing how thin you are.”
Yan Zhuoyu casually changed the subject to divert her grandmother's attention and made a promise with her to visit her during the Chinese New Year.
The video briefly showed the caregiver, and the grandmother said with lingering affection, "Alright, it's probably getting late over there. You young people are working too hard these days, always lacking sleep. Hurry up and get ready for bed, Grandma won't disturb you any longer."
Yan Zhuoyu smiled and said, "Why don't you take a nap? We'll pick you up at the end of the year to go home for New Year's Eve dinner!"
The little old lady happily replied, "Great! Grandma is looking forward to enjoying your blessings."
