Chapter 6 Premature Death
Chapter 6 Premature Death
After Li Daya was sent to the yamen, everyone in the Xiao family except for Xiao Qinian and Xiao Qili returned to the Xiao family home.
"Mother, I'll go check on my third sister-in-law and niece first." Xiao Qirong went straight to Lin Qin's room after entering the house.
Once inside, I saw my third brother and sister-in-law playing with the child.
“Little sister’s here. You all go next door. How did things go?” Xiao Qinian turned to Xiao Qirong and asked.
"Third brother, don't worry, Li Daya has been sent to the yamen, and the eldest brother and the others have gone with her."
"That's good," a ruthless glint flashed across Xiao Qinian's face. Anyone who dared to hurt his wife would definitely pay the price.
"Third brother, let me hold you. Third sister-in-law, how are you feeling?" Xiao Qirong took the child and asked about Lin Qin's health.
Because Xiao Qirong and Xiao Qinian are twins, they have always had a better relationship with their third brother than with their other brothers. They also genuinely like their younger and extremely gentle sister-in-law.
"I'm fine otherwise, but I feel a bit weak and depressed." Lin Qin knew that Xiao Qirong genuinely cared about her, so she told her about her discomfort.
"My wife, I didn't even notice you weren't feeling well. I'm such a bad husband," Xiao Qinian said, feeling extremely guilty. It had been a whole day, and he hadn't noticed anything wrong with his wife. He thought it was a normal phenomenon after childbirth. But thinking about it carefully, his wife had an unexpected premature birth. How could it be the same as a normal delivery?
Xiao Qirong said, "Third brother, you should hurry to town and fetch a doctor to examine your sister-in-law, and your little niece should also be examined."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Qinian and Lin Qin's hearts skipped a beat. Yes, how could they have forgotten that Yue'er was a premature baby? Although she seemed fine these past two days, what if something happened?
Lin Qin was extremely anxious and tried to get up, saying, "Husband, hurry, hurry, hurry and go fetch a doctor."
"Little sister, you watch the child and your third sister-in-law for me while I go to town," Xiao Qinian told Xiao Qirong before hurrying off.
Old Mrs. Xiao, who almost bumped into him from outside the door, called out, "Hey, Third Brother, where are you going?"
But Xiao Qinian had no time to explain; he was already extremely anxious.
"Rong'er, where did your third brother go? He was in such a hurry just now. I asked him once, but he left without even answering." Old Mrs. Xiao asked her daughter as soon as she entered the room.
"Mother, Third Brother went to town to fetch a doctor; Third Sister-in-law isn't feeling well,"
"And also, Mother, why didn't you call a doctor yesterday? Third Sister-in-law went into premature labor. Premature labor affects both the mother and the baby. What if something went wrong? Wouldn't that delay things?" Xiao Qirong was somewhat dissatisfied with her mother.
When Old Mrs. Xiao heard this, she was startled. How could she have forgotten? She knew about this; she had often heard people talk about how premature births could leave women with health problems, and some even died. Why hadn't she thought of it yesterday?
"Third son's wife, I'm getting senile. I forgot such an important thing. It's all my fault." Old Mrs. Xiao was filled with self-blame and worry.
……
About an hour later, Xiao Qinian arrived with Doctor He from the town.
Everyone immediately welcomed Doctor He into the three rooms.
After taking Lin Qin's pulse, Dr. He asked her some questions.
"Dr. He, how is my wife?" Xiao Qinian asked impatiently.
"Your wife's premature birth has damaged her health, and her condition is not good. I'm afraid it will leave her with health problems. If she doesn't recover properly, she may have difficulty conceiving in the future." Doctor He's tone was tinged with regret and helplessness.
"Bring the baby over here so I can take a look." Before everyone could recover from the shock, they heard Dr. He's words and quickly brought Siyue over.
As Doctor He took Siyue's pulse, his expression grew increasingly grave. Everyone felt a chill run through them, as if their hearts had plummeted to the bottom of an abyss. It felt like an eternity later, when Doctor Xiao said with a heavy expression:
"The child's condition is more serious; he may die young and not live past ten years old."
Thump! Old Mrs. Xiao plopped down on the ground. "How could this be? How could Siyue have died so young? She was so adorable. She just opened her eyes this morning, her eyes sparkling as she looked at us, so full of energy." Old Mrs. Xiao sat on the ground, dazed and incredulous.
Grandpa Xiao swayed slightly, instinctively gripping his cane tighter, his eyes filled with sorrow. This was his granddaughter, the granddaughter their whole family had longed for so long to arrive. How could she not live past ten years old? Ten years old! Her life hadn't even begun before it ended. How unfair is fate!
Xiao Qinian had not yet recovered from the shock of his wife's illness when the devastating news of his daughter's early death struck his already cold heart like a bolt from the blue.
His body trembled uncontrollably, as if violently struck by an invisible force. Endless sorrow surged into his heart like a tidal wave, instantly engulfing him.
His eyes widened, filled with despair and helplessness. His lips trembled slightly, but no sound came out; only tears streamed down his cheeks, soaking his clothes. He tried to cover his chest with his hands, attempting to suppress the pain within him, but the agony only intensified, making it almost impossible for him to breathe.
An uncontrollable sob reached everyone's ears, breaking Xiao Qinian's somewhat stiff posture. He turned to look at his wife, Lin Qin, whose hands were gripping the blanket tightly, her eyes red and streaked with tears. Xiao Qinian walked heavily towards Lin Qin, pulling her into his arms. Seemingly finding a sliver of strength in her embrace, she could no longer hold back and burst into tears.
"It's all my fault! Why did I go out? Why didn't I avoid Li Daya when I saw her? It's all because of me that Yue'er is like this. She should have grown up healthy!" Lin Qin was emotionally broken down. She couldn't accept this outcome and blamed herself for everything.
"No, it's not your fault. Our Yue'er is lucky and will be alright. There will definitely be a way." Xiao Qinian forced himself to suppress his grief and comforted his wife, which was also a way to encourage himself.
"Yes, yes, there must be a way, Dr. He, you can definitely save Yue'er, right?" Lin Qin stared at Dr. He with pleading eyes, and everyone in the room turned to look at Dr. He.
Seeing the gazes directed at him, he hoped he could save the newborn life, but he was powerless to do so. Dr. He slowly shook his head, his face showing regret. "The child was born prematurely and has congenital deficiencies. There is no way to treat it. We can only give her some medicine to help her recover and prevent her from suffering too much in the next few years."
Dr. He's words shattered everyone's hopes, and immediately, the room was filled with weeping.
"Dr. He, please prescribe the medicine." Old Master Xiao led Dr. He to the main room to get the medicine, and after seeing Dr. He off, he took the prescription and went back.
