Chapter 188 My Stingy and Poor Dad
Chapter 188 My Stingy and Poor Dad
While Shu Yun was getting a haircut, Gu Jun took Gu Xi for a stroll on the street. Little Gu Xi had never been to the city many times before, and she was especially excited to see the crowded streets. She excitedly waved her little wooden sword around, accidentally poking Gu Jun's face several times.
Gu Jun put on a stern face. "Gu Xi, be good. Put the little wooden sword away properly. If you poke someone, Daddy won't bring you next time."
Gu Xi was especially afraid of his father calling him by his full name. When he met Gu Jun's stern and cold face, he shrank back, obediently said "Oh," and put away the small wooden sword.
Gu Jun's expression softened considerably. He patted his son's head, and the two entered the supply and marketing cooperative. Many counters inside were crowded with people, and the voices of salespeople and customers mingled together, creating a lively atmosphere.
Gu Jun's first glance fell on a light brown long scarf hanging in front of a counter. The light brown color was just right for the autumn atmosphere. The scarf looked finely woven and had tassels hanging at both ends, which made an ordinary scarf more outstanding and eye-catching. Gu Jun thought that it would be very suitable for Shu Yun to wear.
He said to the sales clerk, "Excuse me, sir, may I take that scarf down so I can take a look?"
The sales clerk deals with different people every day and has a keen eye. Although Gu Jun was dressed simply, his demeanor was exceptionally impressive. The sales clerk immediately realized that it was best not to offend him.
Thinking this, he first put on a warm smile and took off the scarf. "Comrade, you have excellent taste. This scarf is a new style this year. Look how fine and dense the knitting is. It's made of 100% cashmere, and it's very soft and gentle on the skin. I only took it off to show you because I see you really want to buy it. I wouldn't normally take it off for just anyone. This scarf is very precious. If you pat it and I touch it, and the scarf is dirty, do you think anyone would want to buy it?"
Upon hearing this, Gu Xi immediately withdrew her eager little hand. Gu Jun touched it and felt that it was indeed very soft, then asked, "How much?"
The sales clerk smiled and said, "This scarf is 4.5 yuan, which is not expensive. You get what you pay for; it's made of really good materials."
Gu Jun: "Okay, then wrap it up for me, I'll take it."
"Alright, I can tell you're a straightforward person, I'll wrap it up for you right away."
Gu Jun took the bag from the sales clerk, thanked her, and left the counter.
Suddenly, Gu Xi tugged at Gu Jun's sleeve, "Dad, shall we go over there and take a look?"
Gu Jun looked in the direction Gu Xi was pointing and saw the candy section.
Gu Jun calmly weighed the remaining money in his pocket. This was his allowance saved up over the past few months, most of which had been spent on the scarf, leaving him with very little. However, Gu Jun calculated in his mind that it should be enough to buy some candy, so he said, "Let's go, Dad will take you to buy whatever you want to eat."
This statement sounded somewhat unconvincing.
"Daddy is so good, baby loves Daddy the most." Gu Xi said sweetly, hugging Gu Jun's neck and snuggling her little face against Gu Jun's cheek.
The counter was filled with different kinds of candy, packaged in glass boxes. The candy wrappers seemed to refract colorful light under the lamp, which immediately caught Gu Xi's attention. He pointed to the colorful candies in glass jars on the counter and said, "Daddy, baby wants to eat candy."
Gu Xi smiled, revealing a set of tiny teeth, looking incredibly cute.
There is no shortage of sugary foods at home, but Shu Yun strictly controls her child's intake. Gu Xi cherishes high-sugar foods like candy, and her mouth waters whenever she sees candy when she goes out.
Gu Jun carried the child forward and weighed out some colorful candies for the little guy. The salesperson told him the price, and Gu Jun breathed a sigh of relief. But before he could fully relax, the little guy tugged at his clothes, "Daddy, I want this one too, the one with the little white rabbit on it."
The saleswoman was a middle-aged woman. When she saw the fair-skinned, chubby, and cute-looking Gu Xi, she smiled much more than usual and softened her voice, saying, "You have good taste, little one. This is milk candy imported from a big city. It's called White Rabbit Milk Candy. It's very milky. Eating one is equivalent to drinking ten cups of milk. It's all concentrated milk."
"Oh, I see." Gu Xi's little nose twitched. The sweet and fragrant smell made him unconsciously drool. Not to mention that the salesperson had put up a sign that one milk candy was equivalent to ten cups of milk. Couldn't he skip drinking milk and eat milk candy in the morning?
Milk candy is delicious, but milk doesn't taste good; Gu Xi's little scheme was already in full swing.
The little girl tugged at Gu Jun's clothes, "Daddy, let's buy it."
Gu Jun asked calmly, "Comrade, how much are the milk candies?"
The sales clerk noticed the scarf bag he was carrying and smiled, saying, "It's not expensive, just 2 yuan per pound."
Gu Jun remained outwardly calm, but inwardly he was astonished. When did 2 yuan per pound become considered expensive? Are prices this high now?
He did the math in his head and realized he only had a few cents left in his pocket. He couldn't buy the milk candy, so he could only shake his head and say, "No need, we won't buy it."
Gu Xi's bright eyes immediately dimmed. "Dad, I want to buy it."
Gu Jun shook his head, "But you already have candy. After you finish all these candies, Daddy will bring you to buy milk candy, okay?"
Gu Xi was unhappy and refused to be held by Gu Jun anymore, shouting, "No!"
Helpless, Gu Jun bent down, his gaze level with the little guy's, and patiently explained, "But Daddy doesn't have any money now."
Gu Xi wouldn't listen to that explanation. He snorted loudly, "Daddy's bad."
After saying that, the little guy ran forward very fast with his short legs, panting heavily, his cheeks puffed out like a little pufferfish.
Shu Yun had just finished getting her hair done when a little cannonball bumped into her leg. Her grandmother's soft voice called out, "Mom."
Shu Yun looked at her son with amusement. His lips were pouting so much they could hang an oil lamp on them. She picked up her eldest son and kissed his little cheek. "Hmm? What's wrong?"
Gu Xi whispered, "Daddy's bad."
Shu Yun lifted the child up and asked, "What's wrong? Did your father bully you? Watch Mommy beat him up."
As she said this, Gu Jun walked over, and Shu Yun gestured to him with her eyes: What's wrong?
Gu Jun said helplessly, "I took him to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought some fruit candies, but he wanted milk candies too. I don't have any money left."
Seeing the bag he was carrying, Shu Yun asked, "What did you buy?"
Gu Jun handed her the bag. "This is a scarf I bought for you."
Shu Yun took it; it felt nice to the touch. She guessed it wouldn't be cheap, no wonder she didn't have money to pamper her son.
It's rare for the little guy to come out, and Shu Yun didn't want to make things unpleasant, so she let Gu Jun hold her son. "Alright, it's just candy, Mom's treating."
"Oh!" The little one, who had just been listless, cheered, "Mommy is so good, Mommy is the best!"
As Gu Xi said this, she didn't forget to glare at him with her small eyes. She thought he was a stingy, penniless father, and hoped that the father she had just spoken of would vanish into thin air like a bubble.
